Some background on the Big Blues Music Festival: “The Big Blue Festival” started as a supporting festival to the Totalsports Challenge that takes place annually in January at Kleinmond. In Jan 2009 the new management of the Hangklip-Kleinmond Tourism Bureau coordinated the festival and aimed to up the standards of especially the entertainment, food and bar. In Jan 2010 the festival theme was adapted to the BLUES music theme and the festival charged a ticket price for the first year since it was founded. It was successful and the HKTB EXCO decided that the BLUES festival idea is to be continued.
The two events (BIG BLUES & Totalsports Challenge) did not complement each other any longer, as each was large enough to be independent, the target markets differed, and two events on the same day confused the public - an amicable and healthy "divorce" took place.
The BIG BLUES festival had a new date and a new image for March 2011. Feedback from visitors was very positive. The Hangklip-Kleinmond Tourism Bureau coordinates the festival, and retains all rights and names associated with the festival, and therefore the festival prescribes to the constitution of the Bureau. The purpose is Bring attention to the beautiful area that we live in through the vehicle of the Blues - attracting visitors by uniting local and national music talents. We aim to enrich the fabric of our community by encouraging involvement in the planning, execution and participation in the festival. We are a not for profit organisation and the festival profit (if any) goes directly back to the community.
Vision: To establish within our area a unique cultural tourism attraction through a two-day Blues Music Festival showcasing and promoting national & local talent, adding a unique local cuisine offering that will attract both visitors and locals and thereby bring attention to our beautiful area, create opportunities for the community and create a positive economic impact for all concerned.
Festival Committee: The advisory committee consists of volunteer members of the Overstrand Municipality, Law Enforcement, Traffic, SAPS, Business owners, Retired individuals, Members of the Hangklip-Kleinmond Tourism Bureau & EXCO, the CWC DMO, Sponsors, Specialists, Service Providers, Volunteers and other Stakeholders. Any member of the community is welcome to join the committee. We do not have a chairperson, but the festival coordinator is also the manager of the HKTB, Louise Fick. Committee members serve voluntarily and do not expect remuneration. The HKTB EXCO remains the decision making committee for the festival. We work closely with many Blues lovers, other festivals, bands and promoters within the Blues Community.
Feedback: We welcome constructive criticism which we can build upon and conduct an annual online survey to receive feedback from people that attend the festival.
Line up & the choosing of artists: In 2011, we had to contact artists to play as it was a new festival. In 2012, it was a combination of us contacting artists and artists submitting their details of their own accord. The line up was chosen based on genre, budget and suitability to our festival. We try and accommodate a combination of up & coming bands and seasoned performers, a combination of local artists and national artists. We strongly believe that Blues is the foundation of many a genre, and we do bring in a bit of variety such as folk and rock, even roots or Afrikaans to celebrate our African connection. Unfortunately there is always an element of disappointment – we cannot keep everyone happy. This year we allowed bands to submit online until 31 Oct 2012. Now that we have all the submissions (over 90), we have called in the assistance of Midnight Sessions to help with the selection.
We aim to stage a festival that is honest and genuine in its intent and one which satisfies our fans.
