The floral regrowth in the Reserve promises to be spectacular and plants flowering after fire will be a prominent feature of the show. Visit the Hermanus Botanical Society Hall to see a wealth of floral exhibits providing information on the nature and benefits of fire in fynbos. Over 300 labelled specimens will be on display. Superb photographs above the specimens will depict the power of plant growth through the blackened landscape. The Fynbos Café will serve a selection of delicious teas and lunches in the gardens every day of the Show. The Fernkloof Nursery, open each day, will be selling a large variety of colourful indigenous plants. The Marquee opposite the Botanical Society Hall will house environmental exhibits and the Hermanus Botanical Society stand will be selling a variety of super items from botanical books and magnifying lenses to needlework items and’ scented soaps! Fun activities for children will include quizzes, treasure hunts, fun runs and back by popular demand Francois and his slithering fynbos snakes! So diarise the dates and enjoy a day out! Hermanus Flower and Eco Fair for 2012 was held from Thursday 20 September to Sunday 23 September in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve.
The Hermanus Flower and Eco Fair went green last year!
As 2011 was the International Year of Forests , the highlight of the Flower Show display was an Afromontane Forest flanked by magnificent floral arrangements. Designer was Hermanus landscape architect Riaan Maritz. There are only some 30 indigenous tree types among the 1600 montane and coastal plant species found in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve (more than 700 tree species, however, in South Africa).
These tree communities grow in moist sheltered kloofs such as Assegaibos and Waterkloof and are thus protected from the fires which periodically sweep through the Fynbos Biome. But the ‘forest islands’ which stretch from the Cape Peninsula to the mountains of Ethiopia are still very vulnerable and an important part of the United Nations’ project to raise awareness and strengthen sustainable forest management.
