Next Birding Festival of Stanford / Hermanus - is yet to be announced...
The Walker Bay Bird Fair, the first regional event of its kind in the Overberg, will cater for all those interests and more. It will be held in the picturesque village of Stanford during the last week of February.
The Walker Bay Bird Fair will replace the annual Stanford village event of the last nine years. The new – much bigger – annual event will be based on the highly successful British Bird Fair, held every year at Rutland Water, now in its 25th year and regarded as the biggest wildlife event in the world. The entrepreneurial Stanford Bird Club has teamed up with Hermanus Bird Club, the biggest in the Overberg, to host the new Walker Bay Bird Fair. They aim to make it the biggest event of its kind in South Africa within a number of years. Telephone: +27(0)28 341 0164 Website: http://www.stanfordbirdclub.co.za |
Building on the success of the 2013 Stanford Bird Fair, we have decided to make the Fair a regional event and in collaboration with Hermanus Bird Club, Dyer Island Conservation Trust and The Overberg Lowland Conservation Trust, we will be hosting an exciting new-look fair, the Walker Bay Bird Fair, on the Village Green in Stanford in February 2015.
Guided bird outings will begin earlier in the week and the main events will start on Friday 27th Feb and run until the Sunday. There will be a large events marquee on the Green where talks and photographic workshops will take place and space will be provided for the many exhibitors ranging from optics, tour companies, books, clothing and accessories, food, crafts etc. We have been fortunate to secure some key speakers and our guest of honour is Tim Appleton MBE, the co-founder of the British Bird Fair. Steve Rooke, Director of Sunbird Tours and international birder of note will also be attending the event. We are currently putting the program together and as soon as we have a final draft, we will inform you. Many thanks and kind regards Debbie Alexander Walker Bay Bird Fair - Email: [email protected] Cell: 082 864 4683 |

The 2012 Stanford Bird Fair took place on 28th, 29th and 30th September 2012, with its base once again being the Stanford Hotel.
Stanford Birding Photographic Competition The annual Stanford birding Photographic Competition was started by Philippa Castle in 2007 and has grown from strength to strength, providing much interest to the Stanford Bird Fair, taking place on 28th, 29th and 30th September, 2012
Stanford is a key focal point for birding in the Important Birding Area (I.B.A.) that makes up the greater part of the Overberg area and of the 68 Endemic bird species in South Africa, 30 occur within close proximity of Stanford.
Avi-tourism is seen as the fastest growing form of eco-tourism in the world and considering this, the Stanford Birding Photographic Competition has literally “spread its wings” to encompass professional, amateur and youth birding photographers from all around the world. In this “Age of Communication” social media is playing a pivotal role in global networking, and the sharing of photographs and information is commonplace. Facebook offers links to the Stanford Birding Group affording members complete freedom to post their birding pictures with relevant information and “chat” capabilities as well as the Stanford Bird Fair Page that anyone may “like” and is the platform from which the Stanford Birding Photographic Competition is marketed and shared around the world, both by members themselves and Google.
The world is also trending toward a Mobile Revolution and the Stanford Birding website is fully compatible with all makes of mobile phone, managed by Mobi4u.
Sponsors are a vitally important factor in establishing both the Stanford Bird Fair and the Stanford Birding Photographic Competition and we rely on their on-going and tremendous support. Edward Snell & Co under one of their brands, Stretton's London Dry Gin, have our sincere thanks and appreciation for their sponsorship of the Fair.
The Stanford Birding Photographic Competition is indebted to all those involved with prize donations and offer a big thank you to Dyer Island Cruises, Marine Dynamics, Skyview Helicopters, Teniqua Treetops, Red-Indigo Restaurant at Grootbos, Haus Giotto, Africa Geographic, Africa Birds & Birding, Rosemarie Breuer and Stanford River Talk.
